The Nigerian National Assembly: What Assembly And For Who?

The National assembly of Nigeria has frustrated and disappointed Nigerians so much that it difficult to repose trust and confidence in them thus every move of the National Assembly is viewed with suspicion. The absence of Yar’Adua which has thrown the nation in crisis has clearly revealed this. Many of them are only there to sustain and enrich their pockets.

The members of this House have failed the country yet again. The unsteady stance of the House in this whole matter may not come as a surprise to the ordinary Nigerians who have by now understood their nature. The upper chamber is the worst Nigerians will think of relying upon to lighten the burden of the nation. The ordinary Nigerian just laugh at them while they think they work for the nation. The people only think of them as big billionaires work to make more money to feed their children, children yet unborn. The members of the upper chamber do not truly represent the nation by the true usage of that language. They are viewed with absolute skepticism.

The Nigerian Senate has no respect for the ordinary Nigerian either because many of them were never voted in but handpicked by their personal godfathers. The recent resolution of the house that the President is fit to rule when it is clear to even distanced foreigners that something is utterly wrong shows that the members of the Senate do not consult their various constituencies to determine the will of the people before getting up to project motions they have been paid to move. Well, they satisfy their masters. In fact, how many of them have functional constituent offices?

They do nothing to move Nigeria forward because of self-interest based on money acquisition. The word “Senator” strikes the ordinary Nigerian as “Millionaires”. If not what is delaying the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill? Why can’t the report of Uwais Electoral Reform be fully implemented? What is the problem with single term of 5 years? So you ask yourself; how many functional laws have been made by the Assembly of these men in the last 11 years.

If the lawmakers cannot intervene in such a manner to end the very simple Yar’Adua logjam then what can they do for the nation? The dictate of the federal system as currently practiced in the country shows that the nation can do without the National Assembly. After all, the whole damned law which often takes years to be passed if at all they do can be done by the almighty Federal Executive Council (FEC) as also shown by the Yar’Adua logjam. Funny country with funny rulers!

David Mark loves Nigeria more than Nigerians and cannot move the Senate beyond what he personally represents. The decision of the House to travel to Saudi Arabia to determine the true state of Yar’Adua is a pilgrimage jamboree because it should have been left for the members of family. Expending tax payers’ money on this fruitless exercise will result to nothing. Thanks to Turai who is currently frustrating this effort as reported. With the state of the nation, the members National Assembly might just wake up from sleep one morning only to discover that their enslaved subjects have migrated to Togo, Ghana, Benin and other relatively peaceful nations where they have found homes.
