African Dating Questions:

When an Ethiopian woman stands in her open doorway it means she will have sex with any man. How’d that start?

In a behavior class we were told this tidbit. Our professor never knew where it came from but assumed it was culturaly related. An Ethiopian woman standing at/in her open front door is a sign that she will have sex with any man who enters. It sounds like it might be some ancient mating thing, but I have no idea.
If anyone has sources verifying or refuting this please post those as well. I’m looking for something concrete to take to my prof. Thanks for the input so far!

Well, I’m Ethiopian and I say it’s not true!!! An Ethiopian woman can stand in her doorway observing the pouring rain, looking after the receding back of a son she’s sent to bring her something from the neighbors or waiting for her husband to come home. That is not a sign for anyone to enter and have sex with her. HOWEVER, in certain villages which are known to be habited by prostitutes (called, in amharic, “Setegna adariwoch”) or the old legendary “Wube Bereha” {desert of beauties} a hood for prostitutes, or at “tela bets” [house of "tela"--a traditional "bar" where an alcoholic drink made from barley is sold and drunk in] standing in the door way is taken as a general sign of invitation to passerby [who usually do not come to those places unless looking for some action]. This works for bars, too. Why it is done is, I guess, because wherever she end up in, an Ethiopian girl is thought by her parents & community to be a “good girl”, shy and “decent” [cast her eyes down when a man talks to her, say "aye" and "nay" when a man speaks to her, eat like a bird infront of a man, never let him know she's interested in him UNLESS she's sure he will marry her, etc etc, in a very much Margaret Mitchell's -of "Gone with the Wind"- world kind of way]. Asking for a passerby to come into her house and have sex with her is considered “dirty” even for a hooker. So she extends the invitation by extending the door of her house, not from any desire of nastiness (Cherry hunnie)!!

She does not sleep with everybody who stepped into the door either. They bargain over the money first and the man, who usually is drunk, is asked to pay in advance. But.. like I said above.. this works strictly for special kinds of villages or under special circumstances. For example, many of the “tela bet” owner ladies do not sleep with their customer. They maybe married and the husband maybe there, among her clientele, chatting happily with a glass, “wancha” of “tella” in his hand. She may have a servant girl who serves the drink and sleeps with customers, depending on the circumstances [the servant girls are considered as slaves, they get the worst treatment ever and the least payment in the planet--they usually are from the countryside--who run to the cities looking for a better life]. The case with “Tej bets” [house of "tej"-an alcohol made from honey] can be similar, or not. Because usually men serve the “tej” at “tej bets” rather than women, because “tej” is stronger than “tella” and the customers usually turn violent after getting drunk and start a brawl or refuse to pay [and the men servants manhandle them]. And NO .. men do not sleep with men in Ethiopia–nor do they stand in the doorway. FYI, tej bets and tela bets are found in every village. However, you can tell them apart from “ordinary” houses by the sign of a “tassa” that’s usually hang on a stick infront of the door. Tassa is.. a glass made of iron or lid used to pour/drink the “tella” with. If somebody put a “tassa” on a stick infront of her door, it means “there is tela” in the house and you can come in and drink [and pay for it, ofcourse ;) ].

I’ve been told women in the countryside who didn’t have enough money to feed their children in the time of “derge” [communist regime] used to stand in the door when soldiers pass by, to invite them in. But these women aren’t prostitutes strictly speaking, they just want some bucks to feed their kids for the night – until the man of the house comes or something happens. I haven’t seen a city girl standing in the door way of a house and being raped because of it. For more info, e-mail me at sweet_biqo@yahoo.com
